Portable Solar-Powered Autoclave
Our intention is to invent a portable (suitcase sized) solar powered autoclave that could be used to sterilize medical or dental instruments by generating steam at a temperature of 121°C at 15 p.s.i. for 15 minutes.
This device will allow health care professionals to use sterile instruments even when they are far from electricity and cannot obtain or carry supplies of non-reusable instruments. With a device that can be easily carried by one person which uses the sun to provide the energy to make the pressurized steam, more sophisticated medical care will be available to those for whom distance and transportation to medical facilities is prohibitive. We believe that this can be done with easily available materials and constructed quite economically. With this device we hope to introduce a higher level of medical care and health than is currently available for many people in developing countries particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and Central and South America.
